What your chat tool saves about you

When a new chat quotes something you said weeks ago, that is a short list of facts the tool loaded before it answered.

Learn once. The same cleanup habit works in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Microsoft 365 Copilot, wherever that app keeps memory.

It is a notepad, not a brain. You can view, edit, and delete what is stored. Most people never look.

What you asked it to keep
A direct request, such as your role, team size, or the project you are in.
What it inferred
A fact it saved because the topic kept coming up, even when you never asked it to remember.

Memory does not sort work by project. A detail from one thread can show up while you are drafting something else.

  1. 1

    Read the list

Open memory settings in the app you use and read every saved fact.

  2. 2

    Delete what is stale

Remove anything outdated, wrong, or tied to work you are no longer doing.

  3. 3

    Decide how it runs

Check the list on a schedule, or turn automatic memory off if nothing should be saved without you.
